UNDERSTANDING OF GEOMETRY IN SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS

1) Introduction

Geometry occupies a distinctive and challenging position within secondary school mathematics
curricula worldwide. Unlike arithmetic or algebra, which rely primarily on numerical manipulation
and symbolic reasoning, geometry demands that learners develop spatial visualisation skills,
deductive reasoning abilities, and the capacity to mentally manipulate abstract two-dimensional and
three-dimensional figures (Battista, 2007). Learners must understand properties of shapes,
transformations, congruence, similarity, coordinate geometry, and geometric proofs—concepts that
are inherently visual and spatial but are traditionally taught through static diagrams on chalkboards
or worksheets. For many secondary school learners, geometry presents significant difficulties that
are qualitatively different from other mathematical domains, with research consistently identifying
geometry as a source of mathematics anxiety, disengagement, and underachievement (Heinze, Cheng,
Ufer, Lin, & Reiss, 2008). GeoGebra, a free, open-source dynamic mathematics software, has
emerged as a promising tool to address these challenges by enabling learners to manipulate
geometric figures dynamically, observe real-time changes, and build connections between visual,
numeric, and symbolic representations (Hohenwarter & Lavicza, 2007). The central research
question guiding this study is: What are the effects of using GeoGebra dynamic geometry software
on secondary school learners' engagement and conceptual understanding of geometry? This question
is examined through three sub-questions: (1) What is the effect of GeoGebra-based instruction
compared to traditional instruction on secondary school learners' behavioural, emotional, and
cognitive engagement during geometry lessons? (2) What is the effect of GeoGebra-based
instruction on learners' conceptual understanding of geometry as measured by assessments of
reasoning and problem-solving? and (3) Do the effects of GeoGebra-based instruction differ for
learners with low, average, and high prior mathematics attainment and for learners with identified
learning difficulties affecting spatial reasoning?

This literature review provides a comprehensive synthesis of existing scholarship on dynamic
geometry software, learner engagement, and conceptual understanding in secondary school
mathematics. The review is organised thematically around the research questions. The first theme
explores the challenges of teaching and learning geometry in secondary schools, including the nature
of geometric reasoning and the prevalence of mathematics anxiety (Battista, 2007; Heinze et al.,
2008). The second theme examines the emergence of GeoGebra and its pedagogical affordances,
including dynamic manipulation, linked multiple representations, and construction tools
(Hohenwarter & Lavicza, 2007; Saha, Ayub, & Tarmizi, 2010). The third theme investigates the
concept of engagement and its relationship to digital tool use (Fredricks, Blumenfeld, & Paris, 2004;
Zengin, Furkan, & Kutluca, 2012). The fourth theme explores the evidence base on GeoGebra's
effectiveness, including meta-analyses and individual studies (Uwurukundo, Maniraho, & Tade,
2020; Özçakır & Çakıroğlu, 2020). The fifth theme examines the role of teacher scaffolding and the
conditions for effective GeoGebra integration (Vesisenaho, Valtonen, Kukkonen, Havu-Nuutinen,
Hartikainen, & Pöntinen, 2017). The review concludes by identifying gaps in the existing literature
and positioning the current study within the scholarly conversation.
