STRENGTHENING EDUCATION SYSTEMS IN AFRICA
Introduction

Inclusive education is based on the principle that every learner, regardless of disability,
background, ability, language, gender or social circumstances, has the right to access
meaningful and quality education. In Africa, inclusive education continues to face
challenges such as limited resources, inadequate teacher training, inaccessible learning
environments and negative attitudes towards learners with disabilities. However,
emerging innovations provide opportunities to transform education systems and create
learning environments where diversity is valued.

This position paper argues that the integration of assistive technologies, Universal
Design for Learning (UDL), Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools and community partnerships
can significantly strengthen inclusive education systems in Africa. Although these
innovations provide important benefits, their implementation requires careful
consideration of ethical issues, affordability, infrastructure limitations and cultural
relevance.




1. Identification and Explanation of Innovations in Inclusive Education
1.1 Assistive Technologies

Assistive technology refers to devices, software and tools designed to support learners
with disabilities in accessing education. These technologies include screen readers for
learners with visual impairments, speech-to-text applications, hearing support devices,
alternative communication tools and adapted learning materials.

In inclusive classrooms, assistive technologies allow learners with disabilities to
