Question 1
1.1.1 Indigenous Knowledge (2)
Indigenous knowledge refers to the knowledge, skills, values, and practices that are
developed by local communities over many generations through experience and interaction
with their environment. This knowledge is passed orally from one generation to another and
assists communities in areas such as agriculture, health, environmental conservation, and
social organisation (Mawere, 2012; UNISA, Study Unit 3).
1.1.2 Totem (2)
A totem is a sacred animal, plant, or natural object that represents the identity and ancestry
of a particular clan, family, or community. Totems create a sense of belonging and are often
associated with rules and customs that guide behaviour towards the totemic species (UNISA,
Study Unit 3; Shava, 2008).
1.1.3 Taboos (2)
Taboos are cultural prohibitions that restrict certain actions, behaviours, or practices
because they are considered inappropriate, harmful, or spiritually unacceptable. They
function as informal laws that regulate human conduct and promote social and
environmental wellbeing (Mawere, 2012; UNISA, Study Unit 3).
