, 1. QUIZ REFLECTION

Assignment 01 and Assignment 02 were quiz assignments that helped me
understand the main themes of HSY1512 in a more practical way. Through these
quizzes, I learnt that early southern African history is not only about dates and
events, but also about understanding how different communities lived, interacted,
adapted and experienced change. Assignment 01 helped me revise the precolonial
societies, especially the San, Khoikhoi and mixed farming communities, and it
showed me how the environment influenced their economies, settlement patterns
and social structures. Assignment 02 helped me focus more on Dutch settlement,
colonial expansion and the effects of colonialism on indigenous people and enslaved
communities. The quizzes also taught me to read the study guide more carefully,
because some questions required close attention to detail rather than general
knowledge. I realised that it is important to understand key concepts such as
colonisation, pastoralism, slavery, frontier interaction and resistance, because these
concepts appear across different study units. In future assignments, I intend to use
this knowledge by planning my answers better, supporting my arguments with
relevant historical examples, and linking different topics instead of treating them
separately. I will also use the quiz feedback to identify areas where I need more
revision, especially where I confused similar terms or events. Overall, the quizzes
helped me build confidence in the module and prepared me to write stronger essay
answers that are clear, structured and based on proper historical understanding.

2. TOPIC CHOICE

TOPIC 1

Why the VOC’s initial intention of establishing only a small refreshment station
at the Cape based on intensive agriculture, gradually gave way to the
emergence of a vast colony based largely on transhumant pastoralism.

I have chosen Topic 1 because it gives me a clear chance to explain how the Dutch
settlement at the Cape changed from a small refreshment station into a wider colony.
