ENG1503
Assignment 1 Semester 2 2026
Unique number:
Due date: 17 August 2026
QUESTION 1

The first main point is that many businesses in South Africa cannot easily find workers with
the skills needed for available jobs. More than 70% of the employers in the Western Cape
study experienced this problem, showing a serious gap between workplace needs and
employee abilities (Magidi & Chivige, 2026).

The second main point is that the shortages are found in several important areas, especially
digital, mathematical, interpersonal and environmental skills. Many workers have only basic
computer knowledge, while others struggle with problem solving, data skills and
understanding environmentally responsible business practices (Magidi & Chivige, 2026).

The third main point is that schools, colleges and businesses all have a part to play in
solving the problem. Training institutions need to provide more practical learning, while
businesses should invest more money in developing employees through workplace training
and apprenticeships (Magidi & Chivige, 2026).
