Life Sciences Grade 12 Notes - Female Reproductive System
1. Anatomy of the Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system is designed for the production of gametes, facilitates
fertilization, and supports the development of a fetus.

• Ovaries: Paired organs located in the pelvic cavity. They produce ova (eggs) and
secrete the hormones oestrogen and progesterone.

• Fallopian tubes (Oviducts): Tubes with fimbriae (finger-like projections) that pick
up the ovulated egg. It is the site of fertilization.

• Uterus: A pear-shaped, muscular organ. It consists of the myometrium
(muscular layer) and the endometrium (lining where the embryo implants).

• Cervix: The lower, narrow portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It
secretes mucus to facilitate or hinder sperm entry.

• Vagina: A muscular canal that serves as the birth canal and the receptacle for the
penis during copulation.

• Vulva: The collective term for external genitalia, including the labia majora, labia
minora, and clitoris.

2. Oogenesis

Oogenesis is the process of gamete formation (ovum production) through meiosis in the
ovaries.
