QUESTION 1: TEACHING A HOME LANGUAGE IN A MULTICULTURAL CONTEXT
1.1 Explain the difference between code-switching, code-mixing, and
translanguaging. (6)
Code-switching
Code-switching occurs when a speaker changes from one language to another during
communication. The speaker usually switches languages between sentences or
phrases to clarify meaning or help listeners understand better. For example, a teacher
may explain a concept in English and then switch to isiZulu to ensure understanding.
Code-mixing
Code-mixing happens when words or phrases from different languages are mixed within
the same sentence or conversation. Learners often combine languages naturally when
speaking with classmates. For example, a learner may say, “I forgot my incwadi at
home,” where the English and isiXhosa words are combined in one sentence.
Translanguaging
Translanguaging is a teaching strategy where learners use all the languages they know
to understand and express ideas. Learners may read in English, discuss ideas in their
home language, and write answers in English. This strategy encourages full
participation and deeper understanding.
1.2.1 What strategy common in teaching English in a multicultural context did you
