, Introduction

Housing is still a major challenge in South Africa. Many people do not have proper
homes because of poverty, unequal living areas, rapid urbanisation, and problems with
government management (PUB2621 Study Guide, Study Unit 8). Although the
Constitution of South Africa states that everyone has the right to adequate housing,
millions of citizens still struggle to access decent homes. New challenges such as the
growth of informal settlements, climate change, and high housing costs continue to
place pressure on human settlements. Examples such as the Joe Slovo Phase 3
project, sandbag building methods, and community participation show some of the ways
South Africa is trying to improve housing and create better living conditions for
communities.
