1.1 What is meant by the term "diversity" in an educational context? (2)

In an educational context, diversity refers to the wide range of individual and group
differences that exist among learners within a school or classroom. According to
Maapola-Thobejane and Mashau (2019), diversity encompasses differences in gender,
sexuality, race, beliefs, family background, language, financial situation, appearance,
abilities, disabilities, interests, strengths, talents, attitudes, and personalities. Drawing

diversity is understood as the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and
nurturing environment that moves beyond simple tolerance towards embracing and
