citizenship in South Africa (20 marks)
South African citizenship is primarily governed by the South African Citizenship Act 88 of
1995, which provides three main ways of acquiring citizenship:




1. Citizenship by Birth
A person becomes a South African citizen by birth if they meet certain legal requirements.

Who qualifies:

 A child born in South Africa to at least one South African citizen or permanent
resident parent, or
 A child born in South Africa who would otherwise be stateless, or
 In some cases, children born outside South Africa to South African citizen parents.

Key features:

 It is automatic at birth if legal conditions are met
 It is based on blood relation (jus sanguinis) and/or place of birth (jus soli)
 It ensures that children are not left stateless

Importance:

 Promotes stability and belonging from birth
