DUE DATE: 4 MAY 2026

QUESTION 1

1.1 Define research in your own words. (5)

Research can be defined as a systematic and purposeful process of investigating a specific
problem or phenomenon with the aim of generating new knowledge or deepening existing
understanding. It involves careful planning, the collection and analysis of data, and the
interpretation of findings in a logical and structured manner. Unlike ordinary information gathering,
research is guided by clearly formulated questions and employs rigorous methods to ensure that
the conclusions reached are credible and meaningful. Ultimately, research contributes to theory
development, problem-solving, and informed decision-making within various fields of study
(Creswell & Creswell, 2018; Kumar, 2019).

1.2 List and briefly explain any two characteristics of good research. (5)

One important characteristic of good research is validity. Validity refers to the extent to which a
study accurately measures what it is intended to measure. For research to be considered valid,
the tools and methods used must align closely with the research objectives. If validity is
compromised, the findings may not truly reflect the reality being studied, thereby reducing the
usefulness and credibility of the research outcomes (Saunders, Lewis & Thornhill, 2019).

Another key characteristic is reliability. Reliability relates to the consistency and stability of the
research findings over time. A study is considered reliable if it can be replicated by other
researchers under similar conditions and yield comparable results. This consistency enhances
confidence in the research process and ensures that the results are not influenced by random
errors or subjective bias. Reliable research therefore strengthens the overall trustworthiness of
the study (Bryman, 2016).
