3 SETS PROVIDED (each including Adler, Horney and Frankl’s theories)
Scenario
A large public hospital in Gauteng is appointing peer-support coordinators for a new
staff wellness programme. The hospital has experienced high levels of staff pressure
because nurses, doctors, cleaners, porters and administrative staff are working long
shifts in emotionally demanding conditions. Some workers feel unsupported, while
others struggle with conflict, burnout and loss of motivation.
The hospital wants to appoint coordinators who can support staff members,
encourage cooperation between departments and help workers remain hopeful
during difficult periods. The coordinators will not replace professional counsellors,
but they will identify staff members who need support, refer them to proper services
and help build a more caring workplace culture.
Applicants must therefore show social responsibility, cooperation, balanced
relationships, emotional maturity, personal responsibility and a sense of meaning in
their work. For this reason, a psychological questionnaire is needed to assist with
selection. The questionnaire is based on Alfred Adler’s individual psychology, Karen
Horney’s socially orientated psychoanalytical theory and Viktor Frankl’s existential
theory.
Adler’s theory is useful because it focuses on social interest, cooperation, feelings of
inferiority and the way people strive to overcome difficulties. Horney’s theory is
useful because it explains how people may move towards others, against others or
away from others when they experience anxiety. Frankl’s theory is useful because it
focuses on meaning, responsibility, values, self-transcendence and future direction.
ADLER-BASED ITEMS
Item 1
When I notice that a colleague is struggling, I try to support them instead of only
focusing on my own work.
