Question 1: Emission Standards Proposal – Should All Countries
Adopt the Same Standards?

I would move against the proposal because adopting the same emission
standards for all countries is unfair and impractical due to differences in
economic development, technological capacity, and historical
contributions to pollution.

Reasoning

Firstly, developed countries have contributed more to global
emissions historically, while developing countries are still growing
economically. Developed nations industrialised earlier and are
responsible for a large share of historical pollution. In contrast,
developing nations rely heavily on industries that may produce higher
emissions to support economic growth and reduce poverty. Imposing the
same strict standards on all countries would place an unfair burden on
developing nations, slowing their development and potentially
worsening social inequalities.

Secondly, countries differ in their ability to implement strict
emission standards. Wealthier nations have access to advanced
technologies, renewable energy, and financial resources to reduce
emissions effectively. Poorer nations, however, may lack these
resources, making it difficult to meet uniform standards. A one-size-fits-
all approach could lead to non-compliance, ineffective implementation,
or even economic hardship in less-developed countries. Flexible
standards would allow all countries to participate in emission reduction
realistically.
