TASK 1: THE TEACHER AS A REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER
1.1 Three core teaching beliefs that will guide my classroom teaching practice
1.1.1 Reflective practice
My first core belief is that a teacher must be a reflective practitioner who thinks
carefully about teaching actions, learner responses and classroom decisions.
Reflective practice is important because teaching is not a fixed routine, since every
lesson, learner and classroom situation can bring different challenges. A reflective
teacher uses self-reflection, reflection-on-action and reflection-for-action to
understand what happened in a lesson, why it happened and how future teaching
can be improved. The BTE2601 Study guide explains that reflective practice helps
teachers explore their own teaching practices and beliefs, and it also leads to a
deeper understanding of their teaching style (BTE2601 Study guide, 2020:1).

This belief will guide me to use technical reflection tools such as the DATA process,
the Guided Reflection Protocol, lesson recordings, peer observation, self-reports and
learner feedback. These tools will help me to avoid guessing about my teaching,
because I will have evidence from the classroom before making changes. For
example, after a lesson where learners did not understand a topic, I would reflect on
my explanation, the examples I used, the learners’ prior knowledge and the barriers
that may have affected their learning.
1.1.2 Pedagogical content knowledge
My second core belief is that a teacher must develop strong pedagogical content
knowledge, which means the teacher must understand both the subject content and
the best ways to teach that content to learners. It is not enough for a teacher to know
the subject, because learners may still struggle if the teacher cannot explain the
content in a clear, meaningful and learner-friendly way. The BTE2601 Study guide
states that subject knowledge should be balanced with knowledge about teaching
and learning, and these areas must be developed together for the benefit of learners
(BTE2601 Study guide, 2020:8).
This belief will guide my lesson planning because I will think about content
