1. Introduction

and multiple forms of systemic violence, the role of the educational researcher
becomes even more complex and urgent.
This essay discusses two key issues. First, it explores what constitutes an activist
researcher in education. Second, it examines the role such a researcher can play in
responding to crises characterised by different forms of genocide, including
epistemicide, ontocide, linguisticide, culturcide and scholasticide. These forms of
crisis go beyond physical violence and involve the destruction of knowledge
systems, identities, languages, cultures and educational opportunities.
The argument presented in this essay is that an activist researcher is one who
combines critical inquiry with social commitment, working collaboratively with
communities to challenge injustice and transform education. In times of crisis, such
researchers play a crucial role in resisting forms of erasure, promoting inclusive
knowledge systems and contributing to meaningful social change. The essay is
structured into three main sections: defining the activist researcher, analysing crisis
contexts, and examining the role of activist researchers in addressing these crises.
