MODULE 5
RATES OF REACTIONS
CHEMISTRY
___
Notes
Orders of reaction
Zero:
Rate does not change with increasing concentration
First:
Initial rate is directly proportional to the concentration of the reactant
If the concentration of reactant doubles, the rate will also double by the same factor
Second:
Initial rate is directly proportional to the square of the concentration of reactant
If the concentration of reactant doubles, the rate will quadruple
If concentration of reactant triples, rate increases by a factor of 9 (3² = 9)
