ASSIGNMENT 1

ENG2611 ASSIGNMENT 1 ANSWERS
2026

, 2026 ENG2611
ASSIGNMENT 1

1.1 Discuss some of the ways that reading helps you understand the world
around you. (4 marks)
- Reading helps us navigate and interpret our immediate environment (street signs,
shop names, instructions) so we can move safely and efficiently.
- It broadens our knowledge of the world through newspapers, textbooks, and
reports, helping us understand current events, science, history, and culture.
- Reading social media and other visual texts (ads, memes, infographics) builds
visual literacy and awareness of how messages are crafted and shared.
- It also invites us to consider not just what is stated, but what is implied: author
perspective, audience, purpose, and bias, which deepens understanding of diverse
viewpoints.

1.2 In your opinion discuss two ways that critical reading differs from simply
recognising words and absorbing words? (4 marks)
- Active vs passive: Critical reading engages questioning, interpretation, and analysis
(What is the author arguing? What evidence supports it? What assumptions are
made?) rather than merely decoding vocabulary.
- Evaluation and inference: Critical reading assesses credibility, bias, and rhetorical
choices, and makes inferences about meaning and significance, whereas
recognising words is about understanding surface language alone.
(You can add a third: connecting ideas across texts, synthesising information, and
relating it to prior knowledge.)

1.3 Discuss why you think literature is considered the most important source
for learning critical reading in academic life. (4 marks)
- Literature places readers in others’ shoes, demanding attention to nuance, motive,
and complexity. This trains empathy and ethical reasoning, essential for interpreting
real-world texts.
- It exposes students to diverse voices, cultures, and contexts, encouraging
sensitivity to different viewpoints and the ability to analyse themes, symbolism, and
authorial intent.
