A Critical Analysis of Development Theory: Evolution, Context and Its
Impact on the Global North and South

1. Introduction

Development theory is a fundamental concept in understanding how
societies grow, transform, and respond to global challenges such as
poverty, inequality, and underdevelopment. It provides a framework
through which scholars and policymakers analyse why some countries
achieve economic prosperity while others remain underdeveloped.
Over time, development theory has evolved significantly, reflecting
changes in global economic systems, political ideologies, and social
priorities.

However, development theory is not neutral. It is shaped by historical
context, power relations, and the interests of those who produce and
apply it. Many early development theories were influenced by Western
experiences and were applied to countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin
America following the end of colonialism. These theories often
promoted development models based on industrialisation, capitalism,
and modernisation, which reflected the trajectories of countries in the
Global North.

As a result, critical scholars have questioned whether development
theory genuinely serves the interests of the Global South or whether it
primarily advances the interests of the Global North. This essay
critically examines the concept of development theory by defining and
explaining it, discussing its historical evolution, and evaluating its
impact on the Global North and South. Through practical examples and
engagement with key scholars such as de Sousa Santos (2012), Pieterse
(2010), and Bull and Bøås (2012), the essay argues that although
