A COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY INTERVENTION TO ADDRESS GENDER-BASED
VIOLENCE IN MY COMMUNITY

Introduction

Communities across the world are confronted with complex social challenges that
negatively affect the well-being, safety, and development of individuals. In many
developing contexts, particularly within African communities, these challenges
are intensified by socio-economic inequalities, unemployment, poverty, and
limited access to support services. Among these challenges, gender-based
violence (GBV) remains one of the most pervasive and deeply rooted social
problems, affecting individuals, families, and entire communities. GBV not only
violates fundamental human rights but also undermines social cohesion and
community development.

Community psychology provides a valuable framework for understanding and
addressing such social issues. Rather than focusing solely on individuals,
community psychology emphasises the role of social structures, environmental
factors, and collective responsibility in shaping human behaviour. It promotes
empowerment, participation, prevention, and social justice as key principles for
developing sustainable solutions. By encouraging communities to actively engage
in identifying and solving their own problems, community psychology fosters
resilience and long-term change.

In my own community, I have observed that many individuals, particularly women
and young girls, experience various forms of gender-based violence. These
experiences often go unreported due to fear, stigma, and a lack of accessible
support systems. Victims frequently suffer in silence, feeling isolated and
powerless. This situation highlights the urgent need for community-based
interventions that provide emotional support, raise awareness, and empower
individuals to break the cycle of abuse.

This assignment identifies gender-based violence as a key challenge in my
community and proposes a community psychology intervention aimed at
addressing this issue. The intervention is guided by core community psychology
