, Overview of SDG 6
Brief Explanation of SDG 6
SDG 6 aims to make sure that everyone has access to clean water and proper sanitation. It also focuses on using
water responsibly, protecting freshwater ecosystems, and ensuring that water resources are available for both
present and future generations.
Why this SDG is important globally and/or locally: Globally, freshwater is fundamental to human survival, public
health, agricultural stability, and economic development, yet billions still lack safely managed drinking water. Locally
(especially within South Africa, a naturally water-scarce country subject to recurrent severe droughts), SDG 6 is
critical for overcoming municipal infrastructure failure, addressing legacy inequities in water supply, mitigating acid
mine drainage and sewage pollution, and protecting vital water source areas like high-altitude mountain
catchments.
Key Challenges Addressed by SDG 6:
• Achieving universal and equitable access to safe, affordable drinking water and dignified, adequate sanitation and
hygiene for all communities.
• Improving ambient water quality by eliminating illegal dumping, minimizing hazardous chemical discharge, and
drastically scaling up municipal wastewater treatment.
• Substantially increasing water-use efficiency across agricultural, industrial, and domestic sectors to combat water
stress and reduce infrastructure losses.
• Protecting and restoring critical water-related ecosystems including rivers, wetlands, aquifers, and lakes through
integrated water resources management (IWRM).
