COM4808
Assignment 1
2026
, INTEGRATED MARKETING COMMUNICATION (IMC) AND
CONTENT MARKETING AS A COMMUNICATION INSTRUMENT
OF THE MARKETING COMMUNICATION MIX
COM4808 – Marketing Communication, Advertising and Public Relations
University of South Africa (UNISA)
Assignment 01 – 2026
1. INTRODUCTION
The landscape of marketing communication has undergone a profound transformation in
recent decades. Driven by the rapid proliferation of digital technologies and shifts in
consumer behaviour, organisations have had to rethink how they communicate with their
audiences. Traditional one-way communication models, which relied heavily on
broadcasting messages through mass media such as television, radio, and print, are no
longer sufficient in an environment where consumers expect dialogue, relevance, and value
from brands (Darvidou 2024).
Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) emerged as a strategic framework designed
to unify all communication efforts and channels into a coherent, consistent brand message
(Belch & Belch 2023). Over time, this framework has expanded beyond its traditional
foundations to incorporate digital strategies, including content marketing, which has
become an indispensable communication instrument in the contemporary marketing
communication mix (Stănescu, Ciobanu & Cruceru 2024).
Content marketing, characterised by the creation and distribution of valuable, relevant, and
consistent content, enables organisations to attract, engage, and retain target audiences
while building long-term brand relationships (Pulizzi 2023). When content marketing is
integrated with brand storytelling the practice of conveying a brand's values, identity, and
promises through compelling narratives its ability to foster emotional connections with
consumers is significantly amplified (Quesenberry & Coolsen 2023).
This assignment discusses and explains how IMC can best make use of content marketing
as a communication instrument of the marketing communication mix to achieve marketing
communication goals. The discussion covers the evolution of IMC, the limitations of the
traditional marketing communication mix, the emergence of content marketing, and the
role of brand storytelling in amplifying brand content across digital channels.
