Sociocultural Theory as a Foundation for My Teaching Philosophy
Introduction
Theories are important in education because they help teachers understand why learners behave,
think and learn in different ways. A teacher does not only teach content, but also works with learners
who come from different families, cultures, languages and life experiences. Sociocultural theory is
useful because it reminds teachers that learning happens through interaction, guidance and shared
meaning-making. In my view, a strong teaching philosophy should not treat learners as empty
containers, but should support them as active people who learn with others. This discussion defines
theory and explains how Sociocultural Theory can support my own teaching practice.
3.1 Definition of the Concept Theory
A theory is a set of connected ideas that helps a person explain, understand and make sense of
something that happens in real life. In teaching, a theory helps me understand how learners learn,
