(National Planning Commission, 2012). This policy direction reflects philosophical ideas
associated with African communitarian traditions, which emphasise the
interdependence between individuals and the community. However, tensions often arise
between communal responsibilities and the individual rights protected by the
Constitution. Two influential African philosophers, Ifeyani A. Menkiti and Kwame
Gyekye, provide contrasting interpretations of personhood that help illuminate this
debate. Menkiti’s theory represents radical communitarianism, arguing that personhood
is achieved through participation in the community. Gyekye, in contrast, advocates
moderate communitarianism, which recognises the community’s importance but
maintains that individuals possess inherent dignity and rights independent of society.

using these two philosophical frameworks. It argues that moderate communitarianism
