ASSIGNMENT 2 SEMESTER 1 2026

UNIQUE NO. 328472
DUE DATE: 9 APRIL 2026

, Plant Physiology, Water Relations and Plant Nutrition - BOT2603

ASSIGNMENT 02

Question 1

1.1 Explanation of Terms

1.1.1 Essential element

An essential element is a chemical element that a plant requires in order to complete its
life cycle and maintain normal growth and development. Without this element, the plant
cannot grow properly or reproduce, and the deficiency cannot be replaced by another
element.

1.1.2 Carbon partitioning

Carbon partitioning refers to the distribution of carbon compounds produced during
photosynthesis to different parts of the plant. These compounds, mainly sugars, are
transported to tissues where they are needed for growth, storage, or metabolism.

1.1.3 Sink activity

Sink activity describes the ability of certain plant organs or tissues to attract and use
photosynthetic products such as sugars and nutrients. Organs such as roots, fruits, and
developing leaves act as sinks because they require energy and materials for growth.

1.1.4 Critical concentration

Critical concentration is the minimum concentration of a nutrient in plant tissue that
allows a plant to achieve near maximum growth. If the nutrient concentration drops
below this level, plant growth and development become limited.
