QUESTION 1

Financial crime detection relies on different analytical tools to identify suspicious
or fraudulent activities. Two important tools used by investigators and financial
institutions are financial profiles and behavioural profiles. While both aim to
detect irregularities that may indicate fraud, they focus on different types of
information and analysis.

Similarities between a financial profile and a behavioural profile

Both profiles are used to identify suspicious patterns and detect financial crime.
They assist investigators, banks, and regulatory authorities in monitoring
individuals or organisations for unusual activities. In addition, both profiles rely
on data analysis and pattern recognition to determine whether a person’s
actions deviate from what is considered normal. Another similarity is that both
profiles support risk assessment and decision-making, helping institutions
determine whether further investigation is necessary. Ultimately, both contribute
to the prevention and detection of fraud, money laundering, and other financial
crimes.

Differences between a financial profile and a behavioural profile

income, assets, liabilities, transaction history, spending patterns, and sources of
funds. The purpose of a financial profile is to determine whether a person’s
financial transactions are consistent with their known financial position. For
example, if a person with a low reported income suddenly conducts large or
frequent transactions, it may indicate possible fraud or money laundering.

In contrast, a behavioural profile focuses on patterns of behaviour and actions
rather than financial records alone. Key elements include transaction behaviour,
frequency of transactions, geographical patterns, timing of transactions, and
typical account usage habits. The purpose of a behavioural profile is to identify
