Conceptualising an African philosophy of education as the creation of
concepts-in-place

Introduction
In this essay I advance the idea that African philosophy of education is best
understood as the ongoing creation of concepts in response to lived place. By
“place” I mean more than a map or a country; it is the felt space where land, climate,
language, culture, history, and social life intertwine with power, economy, and
aspiration. By “concepts” I mean the building blocks through which we think about
education—knowledge, the child, the teacher, intelligence, discipline, curriculum, and
beyond. And by “philosophy of education” I mean the disciplined, reflective practice
of asking what education is for, how it should be taught, who counts as knowledge,
and whose values are privileged. In a world marked by rapid change, global
interconnectedness, inequality, and cultural contestation, philosophy of education
ceases to be a luxury and becomes a vital activity. It is a form of critical navigation—
questioning assumptions about schooling, reimagining purposes, and aligning
teaching and learning with the needs, hopes, and responsibilities of particular
communities.

1) Define Philosophy and Argue its Importance in a Complex World
Philosophy is not merely a stockpile of abstract propositions; it is living, dialogical
inquiry into the most foundational questions about reality, knowledge, value, and
action, pursued through critical reasoning, reflection, and critique. In the context of
education, philosophy asks: What kinds of knowing count as education? What
purposes should schooling serve in our society? How should teachers relate to
learners? What counts as achievement, and who gets to decide? Philosophy,
therefore, is both a mode of thought and a mode of practice: it guides the aims of
education, the design of pedagogy, and the evaluation of outcomes.

The necessity of philosophical reflection in education grows out of our complexity.
We live in an era of rapid technological change, environmental uncertainty,
migration, and social fragmentation. Global capitalism, digital networks, and climate
disruption reshape what counts as knowledge and what futures students are
prepared to pursue. Moreover, schooling is not a neutral transfer of information; it
disciplines dispositions, socializes identities, and legitimises power. Questioning the
fundamental assumptions and goals of education—why we educate, what we
