SEP3701 Assignment 1 (COMPLETE ANSWERS) Semester 1 2026 - DUE 7 April 2026; 100% TRUSTED Complete, trusted solutions and explanations. For assistance, Whats-App 0.8.1..2.7.8..3.3.7.2... CASE STUDY Computer Data Systems (CDS) is an emerging company that manufactures and distributes computers to various businesses in and around Gauteng. In the 2025 financial year the company experienced a spike in hijackings of their delivery trucks transporting computers. It is estimated that CDS lost a total of R of their annual revenue, which is about 30% (impact factor). During a recent hijacking incident, the driver and his two support staff members were injured and hospitalised. As a result, the workers union has threatened to down tools if the situation does not get resolved. The insurance company is also refusing to further attend to the company’s claims due to a lack of proof that there were any attempts to increase or implement the necessary security measures, in order to minimise the risks mentioned above. The company policy does not accommodate or mention any aspects of security-related matters. There are about ten (10) delivery trucks and each one of them transports computers worth R600 000 per delivery/route daily. The trucks do not have tracking devices and there are no security escorts, or any security measures put in place to protect the workers and the computers. On-site orientation results revealed that the security backlog and weakness of security measures for delivery trucks are estimated at 60% and the security risk factor is estimated at 60%. Read the case study carefully and answer all the questions that follow. Your responses must demonstrate critical thinking and application of research methodology concepts. QUESTION 1 Draft security procedures that should be followed at CDS for the protection of employees and property/assets (computers and trucks) in order to address security risk problems therein. (20) Downloaded by Pied Zulu () lOMoARcPSD| SEP3701/102/1/2026 7 QUESTION 2 According to the workers union, CDS is violating the rights of truck drivers and their assistants by exposing them to risks. Advocate how the rights of truck drivers and their assistants are violated in relation to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. (15) QUESTION 3 Discuss precipitating factors causing crime at CDS and calculate the risk factor thereof. (10) QUESTION 4 Design a security survey sheet to prevent car hijackings at CDS and calculate the security backlog thereof. Your survey sheet should contain about twelve (12) questions with comments or recommendations for all negative questions asked and show the calculation of the security backlog. (20) QUESTION 5 Absence of security policy at CDS creates security risks as indicated by workers’ unions and insurance companies in this case study. Suggest to top management any three (3) aspects of security policy that you think are important in addressing security risks at CDS. (15) QUESTION 6 Estimate ‘exposure to risk’ at CDS and calculate the vulnerability factor thereof. (10)

1. INTRODUCTION

Computer Data Systems (CDS) is a growing computer manufacturing and distribution
company operating in and around Gauteng, but it is currently facing a serious escalation in
delivery truck hijackings. During the 2025 financial year, CDS reportedly lost about R20
million, which represents roughly 30 percent of annual revenue, and employees were
physically harmed during at least one incident. These events show that the organisation is
exposed to high levels of operational, financial, and human risk. The situation is worsened
by the absence of basic security controls such as vehicle tracking devices, security
escorts, and formal security procedures, as well as a company policy that does not cover
security matters. At the same time, pressure is increasing from key stakeholders, including
the workers union and the insurance company, both of whom are demanding evidence of
effective risk reduction measures. This assignment applies security risk management and
research methodology concepts to propose practical controls, evaluate legal compliance
under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, and calculate key indicators such as risk
factor, security backlog, exposure to risk, and vulnerability.

2. QUESTION 1: SECURITY PROCEDURES FOR CDS

Security procedures are operational guidelines that give effect to an organisation’s
security policy. While policy sets strategic direction, procedures translate that direction into
clear, practical instructions that employees must follow (Purpura, 2019). In the case of
Computer Data Systems, the absence of a formal security policy and supporting
procedures has increased risk exposure, financial losses, and harm to employees.
Effective procedures must follow a proper risk analysis and security survey to ensure that
controls address real threats (Coole, Corkill and Woodward, 2012). The following security
procedures are proposed to protect employees, trucks, and computer assets.

Access and Vehicle Control Procedures

All delivery trucks must be fitted with approved tracking devices and immobilisers.
Vehicles may only leave the premises after authorisation from a designated control officer.
Drivers must sign for vehicles and confirm route details before departure. Access to
loading bays must be restricted to authorised staff only. Key control registers must be
maintained to prevent unauthorised duplication or misuse. These measures reduce
