Description and explanation

The materials balance principle states that, in the long run, the
quantity of raw materials extracted from the natural environment must
equal the total amount of residuals returned to the environment,
allowing for recycling and temporary accumulation. This principle is
based on the law of conservation of matter, which means that matter
cannot disappear. Everything that enters the economic system as raw
materials must eventually leave it as waste or residuals.
