SECTION 1 – INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
As a business owner operating a network of SMEs in the retail sector, my enterprises
are embedded within a dynamic macroenvironment. The macroenvironment consists
of external forces beyond managerial control but which significantly influence strategic
direction, operational efficiency, and long-term sustainability (Musengi-Ajulu et al.,
2022). Understanding these forces is critical as I expand into butcheries and hardware.
1.1 Discussion of the Macroenvironment
Technological Environment
The technological environment refers to innovations, digital systems, automation, and
technological advancements that influence how businesses operate and compete
(Robbins, De Cenzo & Coulter, 2015). In my current operations, technology enhances
efficiency through point-of-sale (POS) systems, electronic inventory management, and
supplier communication platforms. These systems reduce shrinkage, improve stock
control accuracy, and enable real-time sales analysis. For expansion into butcheries,
technology becomes even more critical. Advanced refrigeration systems, temperature-
monitoring sensors, and cold-chain logistics technologies are essential to comply with
food safety standards and reduce spoilage. In the hardware sector, digital
procurement systems and enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools will improve
supplier coordination and demand forecasting for heavy construction materials.
Failure to adopt technological advancements may reduce competitiveness against
larger retail chains that offer e-commerce platforms and digital payment convenience.
Therefore, technological adaptation is both an operational necessity and a strategic
growth enabler.
Economic Environment
The economic environment includes factors such as inflation, interest rates, exchange
rates, and consumer income levels that influence business performance (Boddy,
2014). At a daily operational level, inflation affects product pricing and purchasing
power within my neighbourhood. Rising interest rates increase the cost of credit
facilities used to finance working capital and future expansion. When expanding into
