Ensure your success with us. .. Draw and label the complete life cycle of Taenia solium, highlighting the definitive host, intermediate host, infective stage, and mode of transmission. Draw and describe the life cycle of Wuchereria bancrofti and explain how each stage contributes to the transmission dynamics of lymphatic filariasis in African rural settings Discuss the role of bile salts in parasite establishment. Choose one insect vector from the family Culicidae common in southern Africa and outline/draw its life cycle. Explain how environmental conditions in South Africa influence each developmental stage. Using one cestode (Taenia solium), one digenean (Schistosoma haematobium), and one nematode (Ascaris lumbricoides) found in Africa, explain how key structural features contribute to parasite survival and pathogenicity in the host. Propose an integrated control programme for tsetse flies in a rural African community where livestock production is severely affected by trypanosomiasis. Your proposed programme should combine biological, chemical, and socio-economic strategies. Explain how water quality and sanitation challenges in rural South Africa contribute to the transmission of Giardia duodenalis. Use at least one South African example in your answer. Write a comprehensive essay on human schistosomiasis. In your essay, discuss its distribution, modes of transmission, clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods, treatment options, and strategies for its prevention and control. Draw and label a Trypanosoma cell, clearly indicating the kinetoplast, nucleus, flagellum, kinetosome, and glycosomes, and explain how each structure supports survival in African hosts For each of the following groups, identify at least one human disease vector (genus or species) and the corresponding pathogen it transmits to humans. Where possible, provide an example relevant to the African context. A. Family Psychodidae B. Family Ceratopogonidae C. Order Anoplura D. Order Siphonaptera E. Phylum Mollusca

QUESTION 1

1. Kinetoplast

The kinetoplast is a dense DNA-containing structure located inside the single large
mitochondrion, near the base of the flagellum. It contains mitochondrial DNA (kDNA).

The kinetoplast regulates mitochondrial function and energy metabolism. In the
bloodstream form of the parasite, mitochondrial activity is reduced, but the kinetoplast
remains essential for maintaining mitochondrial integrity. This enables adaptation between
the tsetse fly vector and the human host.

2. Nucleus

The nucleus contains the parasite’s genetic material and controls cell division,
metabolism, and protein synthesis.
