ILIOPSOAS Anterior muscle of the thigh – Uniarthrodial
ORIGIN:
➢ Psoas: bodies and transverse processes
T12 – L5 & intervertebral discs
➢ Iliacus: Iliac fossa

INSERTION:
➢ Lesser trochanter

INNERVATION:
➢ Psoas: L1, L2, L3
➢ Iliacus: Femoral nerve

ACTION:
➢ Flexion of the hip

RECTUS FEMORIS Quadriceps muscle – Anterior thigh –
Biarthrodial
ORIGIN:
➢ Straight head: anterior inferior iliac
spine
➢ Reflected head: superior to
acetabulum

INSERTION:
➢ Patella (via quadriceps tendon) to the
tibial tuberosity (via patella tendon)

INNERVATION:
➢ Femoral nerve

ACTION:
➢ Flexion of hip
➢ Extension of knee

ORIGIN:
➢ Medial intertrochanteric line
➢ Linea aspera
➢ Medial supracondylar line

INSERTION:
➢ Patella (via quadriceps tendon) to the
tibial tuberosity (via patella tendon)

INNERVATION:
➢ Femoral nerve

ACTION:
➢ Knee extension
➢ Helps stabilise the knee and prevents
lateral displacement of the patella
