QUESTION 1

1.1

a) Hermeneutics and Truth

Hermeneutics, as the theory and philosophy of interpretation, challenges
the traditional understanding of truth as something fixed, objective, and
detached from human experience. Instead of seeing truth as a static fact
waiting to be discovered, hermeneutics understands truth as something
that emerges through interpretation. This perspective is deeply
influenced by thinkers such as Heidegger and Gadamer, who argue that
truth is not simply correspondence between a statement and reality, but
something that unfolds through dialogue, history, and lived experience.

From a hermeneutic perspective, every act of understanding is shaped by
context. We approach texts, events, and experiences with prior
assumptions, cultural backgrounds, language, and historical influences.
These “prejudices” (in Gadamer’s sense) are not necessarily negative;
they are the starting points that make understanding possible. Truth,
therefore, is not neutral or detached from the interpreter. It is shaped by
a fusion between the interpreter’s horizon (their background and
experiences) and the horizon of the text or situation.

In this sense, hermeneutics moves away from the idea that truth is
absolute and universally accessible in the same way to everyone.
Instead, truth is dialogical. It emerges in conversation—between reader
and text, teacher and learner, past and present. This does not mean truth
is purely subjective or arbitrary. Rather, it suggests that truth is relational
and historically situated. We come to deeper understanding through
openness, questioning, and engagement.
