1.1 Define the sociology of education.



Sociology of Education (S.o.E): It is the study of educational structures, processes and
practices from a sociological perspective - part of discipline of education. It defines the
scientific analysis of social processes and social patterns involved in the educational
system.

1.2 What is the meaning of the word ‘education’?



The word 'education' originates from the Latin word educere, which means "to bring out
that which is within." It is centered around the idea of drawing out latent knowledge and
abilities that are inherent in every individual. Education involves imparting or acquiring
general knowledge, reasoning, judgment, and preparing




individuals intellectually for various aspects of life (Schofield, 1999). It is a dynamic,
ever-evolving process, not a static one (Dhiman, 2008). In its broadest sense, education

,is also a form of socialization, it helps people acquire knowledge and skills that allow
them to function effectively within society, maintaining order and contributing to societal
needs (Schofield, 1999).



Throughout history, various philosophers have debated the meaning and purpose of
education. For example, Plato, in The Republic, emphasized using education to



a) Assimilation

Assimilation refers to the conscious and selective process through which culture and
traditions are transmitted to learners, ensuring that the aspects taught are acceptable
and valuable in a democratic society (Prathapan, 2014).



For example Schools teaching respect for different religions help learners adopt values
that promote moral responsibility in society.



b) Society (2)

Society is the system of social relationships and interactions among people, groups,
and institutions that influence human behaviour and promote cooperation for the benefit
of all (Gosling & Taylor, 2011).



For example Families, schools, and government institutions work together to maintain
order and support community development.

, c) Ecology of a school

The ecology of a school refers to the school climate or environment that reflects the
school’s personality and unique character.



For example a school that promotes respect, positive relationships, and a safe learning
space has a healthy school ecology.




d) Activation of constructive and creative forces in the classroom
