This practical grammar lesson helps adult English learners master quantifiers and determiners—small words that make a big difference in clarity, accuracy, and natural-sounding English. Building on previous lessons about singular and plural nouns, this document clearly explains how to express quantity and reference using everyday language. Learners explore when and how to use much, many, some, few, several, all, none, a lot of, as well as determiners such as each, every, both, either, neither, this, that, these, and those. The lesson includes: Clear explanations with simple, real-life examples Common learner “traps” (people, information, luggage, equipment) Practical contrasts (much vs many, countable vs uncountable nouns) A guided reading story set in a grocery store Speaking-focused activities using the 4/3/2 fluency technique Creative, communicative tasks that combine grammar with storytelling Perfect for: Adult ESL learners (A2–B2) Online or in-person English classes Tutors looking for structured, ready-to-use materials Learners improving everyday conversation and exam performance This lesson is ideal for boosting confidence, improving fluency, and helping students sound more natural and precise in real-world English.

The little things

1 LOOK BACK
In our previous lesson we saw that some nouns do not change from singular to
plural.

For example,
Sheep
Fish
Deer
Moose
Offspring
Aircraft
Series

So what can we do to show that these nouns are plural?

Use quantifiers: Adding words like "some," "many," or "several" before the
noun can show plurality.
For example, "many sheep," "some fish," "several aircraft."

Use determiners: Plural determiners like "these," "those," or "both" can also
show plurality.
For example, "these deer," "both moose," "those trout."

Use of adjectives: Placing adjectives before the noun can help show
plurality. For example, "five bison," "several cod," "many offspring."

Use of verbs and pronouns: The choice of verbs and pronouns in the
sentence can also show plurality. For example, "The sheep are grazing," "The
fish are swimming," "The deer roam freely."

, Quantifiers:
Quantifiers are words that tell us how many or how much of
something there is.

MUCH
Goes in front of uncountable nouns: 10 dollars, 30 minutes, 100 Grams
Specific quantities, you can’t count, but you can measure.
I don't have much time, and you don't have much money.

WHEN you specifically asking the measurement- then use many.
How many minutes? How many grams?
How much time? How much flour?

MANY
Goes in front of countable nouns: 1,2 ,3.
We have many friends in many countries.

Watch out for the following traps:
People is a plural noun and always uses many.
There are too many people.
Information, luggage (or baggage), and equipment are uncountable nouns
and therefore are always singular:
- How much luggage did you bring?
- How many bags did you bring?
- How much information do you want?

SOME
It shows an amount or quantity that is not specific.
For example, "I'd like some ice cream."
Not 100g or 2 scoops, just some.
Example:
She bought some flowers for her mother.
Can you give me some advice on how to study for the exam?
