1. What are the benefits of the use of non-standard units of measurement?

Non-standard units of measurement serve as an introduction to measurement for
young children (pre-school, grade R and foundation phase learners)
It forms a foundation for understanding what standard units of measurement is. By
using non-standard units for measurement, it helps them to grasp the concepts of
measurement.
Standard units of measurement requires knowledge to be able to use them,
example to measure something with a ruler, you need to have knowledge of
centimetres and millimetres, but when using non-standard units that knowledge is
not required. A learner is simply describing how hot/cold/long/short etc an object is.
2. Discuss the role of estimation in the development of measurement
concepts. (4)
Estimation is about developing a mental picture in your head when comparing
something without using any official forms of measurement, or the mental image
formed in your mind about the size or proportions of an object.
Estimation is important in both standard and non-standard units of
measurement as it helps learners to grasp the concept of measuring something.
Estimation is something we use daily in our everyday lives. We can estimate by
looking at the milk bottle in the fridge whether we have enough milk or if we will
need to buy more. We estimate how much food we need to cook for a dinner
party. When parking a car, we estimate if the car will fit comfortably into the
parking space.
Before learners can learn the concept of measurement, they must be able to
make an estimate first.
