SELF DEVELOPMENT IN SOCIETY
Self-esteem
Discuss the term ‘self-esteem’ and explain why it is considered important for personal
well-being.

Definition: Self-esteem refers to the way individuals perceive and value themselves,
including their sense of self-worth and competence.

Importance: It is crucial for personal well-being because it helps individuals maintain a
positive outlook, make better decisions, and form healthy relationships. High self-esteem
equips people to handle challenges, resist peer pressure, and avoid destructive
behaviours.

Ways in which a healthy self-esteem can improve academic performance.

• Improved motivation: Students with healthy self-esteem are more motivated to
achieve their academic goals.
• Better stress management: They can handle academic stress and pressure more
effectively, staying calm and focused during exams and assignments.
• Increased confidence: They are more likely to participate in class, ask questions,
and seek help when needed, enhancing their learning experience

The term "binge eating".

Enjoying an activity in excess such as overeating.

The title: I have declared a "war" against my body

To declare/announce that this is now the end of the "body"/weight. You are going to
fight the weight and overcome it

How did the mother negatively influence her
daughter

The mother negatively influenced the daughter by
transferring her own insecurities from her teenage
years to her daughter. The daughter herself was
not worried about her weight, but her mother was.
The mother did what she thought was right, but
she also exposed her daughter to the hardships of
dieting.

How the mother could behave better and positively influence her daughter

The mother could buy healthier foods for the home so that there is no unhealthy food to
choose from. The daughter could possibly experience or understand the importance of
health rather than weight loss.
