Culturally Responsive Teaching and Its Impact on Diverse Student Populations

This article serves as an action research study on incorporating culturally responsive
teaching in the music classroom through the use of a multi-modal approach. It points out that a
combination of visual, auditory, and verbal representations can have an extremely positive
impact on communication and meaning-making in a diverse learning space. Barton and Riddle
indicate that when students' cultures are integrated into the learning space, students are more
likely to become invested in the learning and thus build a connection with the content being
taught. Using a variety of musical traditions and cultural practices allows educators to create an
inclusive environment wherein students feel represented and valued. Through the integration of
multimodality in music education, cultural divides are bridged, and students' learning
experiences become more meaningful and personalized. This study will be beneficial for my
research because it shows exactly how culturally responsive methods can be applied in the area
of music education-a subject largely neglected in the discussion of CRT-and proves to be
effective in building engagement and understanding with a diverse population of students.
