Diseases that go from animals to humans (mainly viral)

Uganda in 1947
3. What are the symptoms of Zika?
Muscle aches, rash and fever
4. Why was Zika not a big concern at first?
Considered mild disease, mostly asymptomatic
5. What brought attention to Zika?
Possible link to birth defects including microcephaly. Virus infects neurons and developing nervous system
tissues.
6. What insect carries the Zika virus?
Mosquitos – especially the Aedes aegypti
7. What other diseases might mosquitoes carry?
Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile
8. Why was Ebola not a big problem in the past?
Occurred in isolated villages
9. Why did the most recent outbreak of Ebola occur?
Occurred in poor nations, not familiar with symptoms, poor health care and service and poor public health
system to track disease. Towns were not isolated and occurred in more densely populated area

1976 in Yambuku in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo)
