Chapter 1: There is No one Left

The first ideology that presents itself is the ideology of the child. This ideology is lain out in

the interactions between Mary Lenox and her parents. It is standard expectation that parents

should take care of their children by spending lots of time with them. On the contrary, Mary’s

mother is selfish and constantly ignores her while her father is constantly busy with government

matters. Mary has all she requires regarding physical materials. However, does not get any of her

emotional needs satisfied.

Chapter 2: Mistress Mary Quite Contrary

Loneliness appears a lot in this chapter of the novel. Mary, the main character of the Novel

suffers from loneliness due to her upbringing whereby her parents secluded her. As we see in her

current life, she in no way misses her mother. On the other hand, the family she is living with

right now see her as very weird. As such, they have also secluded her leaving her very lonely.

Archibald also faces loneliness after his wife dies. He acquires a lonely life whereby no one

visits his house, and he does not leave his house.
