1 Read the following information from a magazine article.
Oggi l’istruzione è obbligatoria fino a sedici anni ma nel passato non si doveva fare
la scuola media. I nostri nonni non avevano tanti mezzi di trasporto e molti di loro
dovevano andare a scuola a piedi o, se fortunati, in bicicletta.
Le classi nel passato erano molto numerose, e in alcune scuole si poteva arrivare
anche a un numero di quaranta allievi, quindi il maestro doveva essere molto severo.
Si studiavano materie simili ad oggi e le pagelle scolastiche erano consegnate alle
famiglie ogni tre mesi, con un voto su dieci per ogni materia.

Quando ha visto l’annuncio, Emma ha pensato subito che fosse il lavoro perfetto per
lei. L’idea di fare la babysitter le piaceva molto: trovava tutti i bambini carini, anche se
non aveva mai pensato di avere figli suoi, e comunque era troppo giovane.
Emma ha letto l’annuncio altre due volte, per essere sicura di aver capito bene. Offrivano
anche l’alloggio e se l’avessero presa, avrebbe avuto tutto il tempo per studiare. La
bambina aveva dieci anni, ed Emma avrebbe dovuto fare solo piccole cose quotidiane
come accompagnarla a scuola e aiutarla a fare i compiti.
