EOSC118 MODULE A
Lesson 3
- Identify the top producing countries for gold, Platinum Group Metals, and
diamonds.
- Gold- SA 11% / China 12%
- Platinum groups (rarer than gold), RH most expensive— South Africa and
Russia
- Diamonds- South Africa
- Identify the prominent uses for gold, PGMs and diamonds.
- Gold- Jewelry
- PGM- primarily autocatalysts also used in jewelry and electronics
- Diamonds- Jewelry, non gem diamonds used in industrial applications most
commonly abrasives
- Describe the steps needed to take diamonds from prospecting and exploration to
market.
- Diamond mine
- Central selling organization
- DTC sightholder manufacturer
- Cutting house or jewelry manufacturer
- Gem wholesaler or jewellery retailer
- Explain why De Beers no longer has a monopoly on the diamond market.
- Australia Argyle Mine in 1980s
- Political changes and deregulations in Russia/Angola
- Ekati (mine in Canada) began producing high quality diamonds
- Describe the role that organizations such as the GIA have in the jewellery indus
- Independent evaluation of diamonds (seller may want to upscale and buyer
downscale), small differences in diamonds can be substantial
- Documentation of cut quality, colour, clarity and carat weight
Lesson 4
- List the layers and basic characteristics of the Earth's interior and their correct
sequence.
- Crust- out layer , tectonic plates (lithosphere)
- Mantle- in continual motion with hot mantle rising from depth and cooler upper
mantle material sinking to lower areas. Convection currents. Relatively soft
lubricates layer 4 tectonic plates, (asthenosphere)
- Outer core- liquid layer
- Inner core- solid and metallic composition
- Summarize the basic concept of plate tectonics and describe processes that occur
along the three types of tectonic plate boundaries.
- Define the terms rock, mineral, and gemstone, and describe the relationship
between them.
