Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1
A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators
Nursing quality indicators, which are also referred to as nursing-sensitive indicators, are
indicators that can influence the quality of nursing care based on the outcomes and patient care.
“The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) is the only national nursing
database that provides quarterly and annual reporting of structure, process and outcome
indicators to evaluate nursing care at the unit level” (Montalvo, 2007). In the scenario, Mr. J has
a possible pressure ulcer and is described as being in restraints; the patient is also Jewish and eats
a kosher diet, which has not been given to him. The nursing quality indicators that factor into this
scenario are pressure ulcer prevalence and restraint prevalence. By reviewing NQIs, the nursing
staff would be able to review data collected regarding pressure ulcer prevalence and restraint
prevalence and find ways to improve their practice to improve patient and nurse outcomes.
