Organizational Risk Management Interview

Tiffany Hunt is a registered nurse at Oroville hospital working in endoscopy. She has

been working as a nurse for seven years. She has worked intimately with risk management

implementing risk management plans and helping create these plans. The following essay will

examine the interview I conducted with Tiffany regarding risk management.

Strategies

Risk management in healthcare is a set of key procedures that help healthcare workers

prevent injury in patients from medical errors, falls, and errors in identification. Tiffany states

that within her hospital they access each patient for risks ensuring the procedure will not cause

further risk to the patient. This hospital also has a complex drug dispensing system to help each

staff member administer the correct amount of medication. The hospital has a two-person cosign

system in use for high-risk medication. In this system two staff members who are authorized to

give medication must sign that it was given to the patient in the correct dosage. This same

process applies to disposal of narcotics and other high-risk medications.

Education

Education on risk management is important in helping all staff members understand the

key aspects of the risk management plan. The hospital provides each staff member with training

annually. These training courses are split up into key categories to address all aspects of the risk

management plan the hospital carries, these include negligence, malpractice, and healthcare laws

such as HIPPA and antikick back laws. In addition to this yearly training the hospital mandates

that each staff member completes ongoing education with an emphasis on the specialty in which

they currently work. These ongoing education classes can range from stroke education to

advanced cardiac life support.
