Hello Class,
According to Cromer & Cromer, Abnormal Psychology, (2021) The Sex Therapy approach was
started in the 1950's. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and family system therapies were integrated
into the sex therapy approach, (Cromer & Cromer 2021). The sex therapy approach helped the
man and the woman to function sexually in a healthy way and have enhanced pleasurable sexual
gratification. In the sex therapy approach there are 10 principles behind the sex therapy
approach. Assessment of the problem is really important the sexual history of the couple and
them as individuals plays into where they are at with their sexual relationship. Education and
Sexuality is crucial because if one spouse is not engaging and taking responsibility for their part,
the therapy is less effective or not at all. Emotion Identification is key because if there is
unresolved emotional issues to engage with each other physically. This principle also helps to
reveal if there is a sexual disorder because of the psychological aspect of it. Mindfulness is a big
factor because it discusses the negative thoughts that go through the mind of the spouse while
having sex with their spouse. These thoughts can be accepted and then disregarded. In
replacement of those thoughts it is important to tune into the physical sensations that are being
facilitated by their partner. Increasing sexual and general communication is important because
there are several different positions to try as a couple. Some of these positions may be more
comfortable then other especially if the spouse has symptoms of a sexual disorder. The change of
destructive couple interactions and life styles makes a difference because there could be a lack of
intimacy because the husband's job is asking too much of him or the kids are taking the wife's
complete attention away and as a result, neglect is in the marriage now. Lastly, addressing the
medical factors of the couple. The therapist will encourage physical activity for patients who
have a sexual disorder. If the sexual dysfunction is caused by a disease, medication, or injury, the
therapy will lower the dosage or changing the medication, Cromer & Cromer, (2021)
Cromer & Cromer states that Male hypoactive sexual desire disorder and the female sexual
interest/ arousal disorder points out that these two disorders are considered to be two of the most
