Jorge attended an intake interview at a residential treatment facility, accompanied by his
son Guillermo. During this session, Jorge's behaviors and symptoms were assessed to determine
the severity of his condition. Guillermo provided additional insights into his father's alcohol use,
helping to create a comprehensive picture of Jorge's health. This collaborative evaluation aimed
to establish an accurate diagnosis and develop an effective treatment plan for Jorge's recovery.
Based on the interview Jorge may be diagnosed with moderate alcohol use disorder. The
symptoms Jorge exhibits, along with Guillermo's testimony, are consistent with this condition.
According to the DSM-5, a moderate level of alcohol use disorder is indicated by the presence of
four to five symptoms (APA, 2022).
Signs and Symptoms of Dysfunction
Jorge exhibited several signs and symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Jorge
admitted to drinking daily without restricting the amount of alcohol he consumes, claiming he
knows his limits. His daily, unrestricted drinking shows a lack of control, a key symptom of
AUD. His son Guillermo added that Jorge's drinking has interfered and caused job troubles over
the past year. Despite the problems his drinking has caused with friends and family, Jorge
continues to drink. Guillermo also mentioned that, according to Jorge's last physical and FAA
medical records, doctors believe he is experiencing memory loss due to his drinking. Due to
Jorge spending a lot of time drinking, he has found that it has interfered with his relationship
with his sons and caused job troubles. Despite these issues, he continues to drink, has gotten into
unsafe situations, and persists in drinking even though it may be contributing to memory loss.
These symptoms are considered dysfunctional because they interfere with his ability to carry out
daily tasks and negatively impact his family.
