PSY-470 Abnormal Psychology Research Paper Outline

Topic/Proposed Title: Eating Disorders

Introduction: We all are aware of the importance that food has on our everyday life; it is necessary for
survival. What happens when you have an unhealthy relationship with food though? Eating disorders can
be defined as a mental illness disorder where individuals will experience abnormal or disturbed eating
habits. Those who have eating disorders become obsessed with the choices in their foods, their body
weight and appearance. There are several million individuals today who struggle with eating disorders,
typically these individuals are female, and they normally are around the age of twelve to thirty-five years
old (Poliyy & Herman, 2020). There are three different types of eating disorders, those include anorexia
nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.

Purpose & Thesis Statement: The purpose of this essay is to provide a comprehensive
explanation of the three different types of eating disorders, address the societal and/or cultural
implications within eating disorders and lastly, discuss how the subject is related to one or more
models of abnormality.

1st Main Point: That Serves to Support Your Thesis:

• Eating disorders consist of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Eating
disorders are characterized by several factors that include, biochemical,
genetic, environmental, and psychological. (Polivy & Herman, 2002).
o This main idea is revolved around a comprehensive explanation of
eating disorders. This article supports the main point because this is
explaining the causes of eating disorders and how they emerge in
different individuals.

• Signs and symptoms that friends and family should be aware of when dealing
with an individual who is possibly struggling with an eating disorder are to look
for dramatic weight loss or weight gain, if they are only eating specific foods, if
they are not eating at all, if they make up excuses to not eat meals, if they are
over exercising, etc. (Siddiqui, et.al, 1994).
o This article supports the main point because I am continuing to explain
eating disorders and the signs and symptoms that family members
should be aware of when possibly dealing with an individual who may
be struggling with an eating disorder.
