Defi nition of
Bipolar Disorder-
Bip olar disord er is a me n t al illness t hat c a n b e
chronic or episodic. It is s o m e t i m e s referred to
old t e r m s like “manic- d e p r e s s i v e d is ord er ” or
“ man ic d epression”. All p e o p le experience their
n o rm al u p s a n d d o w n s , b u t with bip olar disorder,
the r a n g e of m o o d c h a n g e s c an be ex treme (NIH,

e p i s o d e s t hat alternate with major d e p r e s s i v e
e p i s o d e s o ver the c o ur s e of time (Co me r & Comer,
2021).
