, The ADDIE model is used in instructional design. The phases of the

ADDIE model are analysis, design, development, implementation, and

evaluation. (Lasky, 2024) For the module “Hygiene and Health Promotion,”

the initial phase of the ADDIE model, analysis is used by reviewing the scenario in the

course objectives to ensure the goals and outcomes were aligned. Hygiene and health

promotion align with creating a community health lesson. The design portion of the

course came into play by using the templates provided in the curriculum and creating

modules and topics pertinent to community health nursing. Each topic was curated with

an objective summary and description, creating context-based scenarios from the

previously designed outline. Realizing that hygiene and health promotion are critical to

community health, hand hygiene and standard precautions in the community were

designated topics. A group project creating an informational packet for a local high

school was designed as the assignment for the learners. For the development aspects

of the ADDIE model, the development phase included reviewing the context-based

scenarios to ensure the instructions were clear to the learners. For the informational

pamphlets, the learners will give peer feedback. This peer feedback will allow the

educator to evaluate the learners' understanding. In this assignment, there is no

demonstration of implementation or evaluation.




Challenges in the Online Learning Environment

, The unique challenges to online learning are the lack of social interaction and

technological barriers. The lack of social interaction can decrease the learner’s sense of

belonging. The sense of belonging increases learners’ retention, success, and

satisfaction. (Robinson & Breen, 2022) Learners will not interact face-to-face with their

educators and peers online. The educator must create an environment during facilitation

where the learner feels comfortable interacting with peers and contributing to the class.

Learners may feel comfortable in different areas of contribution. For example, one

learner may be shy speaking out in front of multiple peers during live lectures but may

excel in discussion forums that feel more one-on-one with peers. The educator would

ensure that there are discussion boards or social groups throughout the university, such

as the course chatter function offered by Western Governors University. (You’re Not

Alone in Online Degree Programs, 2022) For a learner not participating in social

activities during class, the educator may set up open office hours and consider one-on-

one support to ensure a sense of belonging.


Another challenge to the online platform is technological barriers. The learner

may have difficulty utilizing the course materials if the online learning platform is difficult

to navigate. For example, if the learner does not have the appropriate permission set on

their personal computer or the educator has not set appropriate privileges, then the

learner may not be able to download a course fact sheet, and in this case, the educator

would need to be versed in the most effective way to distribute media for the course.

The educator would also have information on accessing IT support through the

university and how to outsource technological help if it is outside the educator's scope.
