Role of the Provider and Scope of Practice
Healthcare professionals may dress the same, easily interact with each other, and seem to
be speaking the same unfamiliar language to a non-healthcare professional, however, each
worker is bringing their own knowledge and skill to patient care. As all healthcare professional’s
goals are to provide the best patient care, each have their own set of roles and responsibilities.
Although many roles and responsibilities between professions are similar, each profession is
required to remain withing their own scope of practice. A scope of practice is defined as
activities that members of a specific profession are legally allowed to do as a result of their
education (Slusser et al., 2018). Radiology technicians and physical therapy assistants
commonly model an interprofessional team, sharing similar roles and responsibilities, however,
are required to remain within their own scope of practice.
One example of a health care professional is a Radiology technician. Many are familiar
with an x-ray, as known as a radiograph or radiogram. After completing a certification in
radiology to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, future radiology technicians
develop skills and knowledge in different modalities of imaging during their time in required
clinical practicum. According to The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists website,
following the passing of an accredited education program and ARRT examination, a person will
then earn their credentials (ARRT, 2024). Radiology technicians can be found in a multitude of
healthcare settings including, hospitals, diagnostic clinics, urgent care clinics, free standing
emergency rooms, traveling mobile imaging companies, and many more. The scope of practice
of a radiology technician is to ensure clear and precise diagnostic images are collected for the
radiologist to read and report their findings. In addition to ensuring the images collected are
appropriate, the radiology technician is responsible for adjusting the patient to the correct
