Ethical Case Studies
Case 1: A client with depression who has been seeing a therapist for a year has begun to
get more depressed and has recently revealed an eating disorder that has been untreated
for many years. This client is seeing you for case management services. In your capacity as
a case manager, how can you ensure you are meeting the basic ethical principles listed
above? Apply each of the principles to different aspects of the case you would reasonably
expect to encounter.
As a professional in the behavioral health field, your first priority is to ensure that the client
receives appropriate and timely care for their eating disorder. You may want to discuss with the
client the possibility of seeing a specialist in the treatment of eating disorders, such as a
registered dietitian or an eating disorder therapist. If the client is already seeing a therapist, you
may want to coordinate with them to ensure that the client's treatment plan includes addressing
the eating disorder. It’s also important to recognize that the client’s worsening depression may
be related to their untreated eating disorder. Eating disorders often co-occur with other mental
health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. It’s crucial to address the
underlying causes of the eating disorder as part of the client’s overall treatment plan.
